Delonix regia (Bojer) Raf.

D. regia is a perennial tree. Leaves are alternare, compound, carried by a medium stalk. The tree has a flat crown. Branche development is droop. Stem is woody, upright covered with light brown to greyish smooth barks. Flowers are red. Fruits are flat, oblong pods containing seeds.

Cotyledons are oblong shaped, entire and fleshy.

D. regia is perennial, semi evergreen tree, can grow up to 20 cm height. It is a fast growing plant. Crushed leaves are slightly aromatic.

Roots are cable system.

Stem is upright, woody and clindrical. The base of the stem is buttree, covered with smooth barks.

Leaves are alternate, compound and bipinnate. Each leaf has 15 pairs of opposite pinnae, each pinna bearing 25-30 pairs of opposite leaflets. Leaves are fine, pebescent and light green.

Inflorescence are terminal and clustered.

Flowers has 5 petals, the lower four petals have long claws, 5 cm long and red in colours, the upper petal is longer, yellow with red spots.

Fruits are seedpods like, woody, flat and ~55 cm long. It is green and turn bron when matured. Fruits contain seeds inside.

Seeds are brown, oblong shaped, 2 cm long and 7 mm wide.

D. regia multiplies by seeds and cutting. It can tolarate dry conditions and hight temparature.

Occurs in villages, dry land and riverine.

Distrubuted to Madagascar and Caribean.

Distributed to Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu Natal.

Distributed to the neighbouring communities.

It is used as a garden subject.
