Bush or shrub 3-6 m, leaves acumintate, glabrous extra-axilary crypt-type domatia, in Portères 1962 b, in Guinea first planting in 1840, and at the same time in Gabon. the production increases if pruning is done. Very resistant to winter drought, not suffering from short summer droughts, accommodating poor soils, growing and producing well up to 1,000 m alt.fructification in the middle of the dry season, the seeds are dormant until the first rain, seedlings appear in May or June (Berthaud 1986). Used for making walking-sticks in Sierra Leone. The small bean gives a very aromatic coffee. There are large-leaf and large-fruited types in Guinea and Ivory Coast. Population from East RCI (Berthaud 1986): very numerous plagiotrops, very samll leaves, one flower / inflo and spherical fruits. In West RCI: 2 flowers/inflo, less plagiotrops, leaves larger and fruits elongated. in Berthaud 1986, interspecific gene exchange between C. stenophylla, C. liberica and C. canephora has been recorded. |
